What main conventions form a music video?

  • Editing; different locations, special effects etc. This will add to the narrative, if the editing matches the beat of the song.
  • Eye contact with the camera with regards to cinematography, close-ups show emotion for example Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball shows Miley with tears running down her face with an extreme close-up shot.
  • Narrative or abstract? Narrative is more popular especially with the pop genre, however this depends on the genre and the lyrics of the song.
  • Performance element, popular within the rock genre.
  • Lip-sync is usually shown broadly across many genres and is difficult to achieve effectively. Many artists show lip-sync in their videos which creates a popular convention.
