Top 10 Music Videos
The above video shows a range of music videos which show many different genres, narratives and relate to many representation theories. The videos show live performance, narrative and also abstract themes.
The range of editing, mise-en-scene and cinematography will help me to develop my ideas further in order to appeal to my target audience. For example the black and white effect in Alesso - Tear The Roof Up is effective for the genre because it adds a sense of darkness, like a club scene as the genre of the song is Dance music. This is the complete opposite to the next song Alexa Goddard - So There where the mise-en-scene is very colourful in both costume and location of the video. This re-enforces the song and also the singer, further introducing gender stereotypes as blonde girls are generally believed to like colourful backgrounds and clothes. This gender stereotype is also shown in The Knocks / Powers -Classic as the girls who are laying down are dressed colourfully, whereas the boy playing the guitar only wears a bright t-shirt and the rest of his clothing is black or white. Sam Smith - Stay With Me is similar to the genre of my music video, and also relates to relationships like the song I have chosen. This could help with my planning because the editing in this song would be at a similar pace to mine, and my video would be less likely to be conventionally similar to Alexa Goddard and The Knocks songs.
The use of cinematography in each video is also influential towards my product, for example close-ups to show emotion and long shots and medium close-ups to help develop a narrative within my product. For example in Pixie Lott - Break Up Song the use of close-ups shows the emotions from the couple. This adds to the narrative and gives the audience an insight into the feelings of the characters within the video. Alternatively in Katy Perry - This Is How We Do the medium close-up shows the happiness on her face because of the pace and narrative of the song, for example if Katy Perry looked particularly sad or upset in this music video the audience would struggle to understand the reason for it.
